Magic

Overview

Magic is a way of changing the world though the usage of Mana. Different Species have different types of Mana and different cultural knowledge of magic.

In most Species the ability to use magic is very rare and in it’s even more rare for someone to actually posses strong magic. Some Species are only limited to weak magic or can’t have any magic at all.

Core principles

Using Magic requires two things Mana and the knowledge of how to use it. The power of a Magician is dependent on the amount of available Mana and the skill in using it.

Most Magic can have different degrees on how real it is the more real the more skill and Mana is required. For example if takes little effort to cast a cold flame but it requires a lot more effort to make a hot one. It also takes a lot of skill being able to exactly get the temperature you want while using as little Mana as possible. A inexperienced Magician might be able to create a small hot flame but they will waste a lot more Mana on it then necessary.

The degree of how real the thing is a Magician created also determines what happens after they stop casting their magic. For example if a Magician freezes water at a temperature above the freezing point it melts instantly as soon as they stop using Mana to keep it in this state. If they created ice below the freezing point it will only slowly melt according to the temperature of the environment.

Range
The farther something is away the harder is to affect with with Magic. Many Magicians can only use Magic on things they are directly touching.
This range limitation can be circumvented by creating an object that persists without the usage of Magic. If a Magician for example creates real ice and then accelerates the ice at to a high speed they can hit targets far outside of the range of their Magic.
Blocking Magic
Learning how to block certain types of Magic is often easier then learning how to use them. The degree of how real the objects created are have a strong influence on how easy it is to block them. If an object like a block of ice doesn’t require any Magic to stay alive it is essentially the same as if someone would be using a piece of ice from the environment and blocking real physical objects is a lot more complicated and requires more Mana.
Magic Armour
It is possible to create armour that is resistant against Magic but it follows the same rules as actively blocking Magic.
This kind of armour is very expensive and only Dwarves are able to create it in high enough quality to be able to block most Magic.
The use of Magic Armour does not require any Magical abilities though which makes it very valuable to anyone with no Magical Potential.
Magic Weapons
It is possible to create weapons with build in Magic abilities. Unlike Magic Armour most of those weapons require the user to have Magical skills and require the users Mana to work.
There are a small number of weapons created by Dwarves that have abilities that can be used without any Magical Potential.
Most Magical weapons lose their abilities over time and need constant repairs. This paired with their high cost make them unpopular.

Magic Schools

While the genetics detriment ones magic potential they have little influence in what type of magic someone can use. Most people require long training to unlock their magic potential. Only in some Species learning magic happens naturally. Many magical traditions are passed down within a culture or sometimes even within a family but there are some bigger Magic Schools that have developed sophisticated systems of magic use they are able to teach across different Species.
